BaoBab 81 - Saint-Gilles

Initiated in 2008-2009, this project emerged in a densely populated and heavily frequented area that extends from one end of St Gilles to the other, along tram line 81. The project involves multicultural and intergenerational activities to make the neighbourhood a place for shared, sustainable and “green” living.
Its principal activities aim to plant façades and public spaces and promote composting and shared gardening, with the creation of a collective vegetable garden. It also strives to promote “soft” mobility and sustainable food, with creation of a collective buying group for organic products, organisation of a “slow food” workshop, etc.
To promote conviviality, the residents take part in organisation of neighbourhood parties and visits, participation in public enquiries, discovery walks in a park, etc.
In general, the project aims to disseminate information on respect for the environment and mutual aid between neighbours. It relies on the participation of residents, the municipality, the STIB, the business centre and several local institutions and associations.
