Dieleghem Wood

Along with the woods of Laerbeek, Poelbos, part of King Baudouin Park and the Jette and Ganshoren marshes, Dieleghem wood constitutes a Natura 2000 special area of conservation. It is a remarkable woodland complex of over 50 hectares on the northwest periphery of Brussels.

The site is made up of wetlands, a knoll from an old wayside cross, several paths winding through the hazelnut trees and a beautiful beech grove, along with ashes, plane trees, oaks and young elms.

The entire wooded area forms an essential complex of feeding areas for 12 species of bats. It also harbours an especially significant population of rose-ringed parakeets and Alexandrine parakeets.

The edge is woodland; two large recreational meadows serve as a play area for children and in particular for youth groups.

Management of the site by Brussels Environment targets development of the biodiversity typical of the woodland environment. The dead wood and pruned branches are left on the ground, promoting the appearance of mushrooms, mosses, wood-eating insects, birds and other small mammals.
