Durabl’XL - Ixelles

Initiated in 2008-2009 to monitor water management in the neighbourhood, this project groups together various blocks around the Place Flagey. Concerned by soil sealing in this highly urbanised neighbourhood and by the planned construction of the Place Flagey storm water tank, the residents initially mobilised to consider and act on these issues.

The project has allowed other sustainable initiatives to emerge. Its principal activities involve sustainable food and conviviality, with the organisation of cooking workshops and a large street banquet. Organic waste management is the subject of several activities: individual or neighbourhood composting, cyclo-composting and presence at the market.

Other initiatives have been taken in favour of rational use of energy and water, “soft” mobility, and finally preservation of biodiversity, nature in the garden and discovery of the parks and vacant land in the neighbourhood. The project relies on the participation of residents and users of the neighbourhood, but also of experts from the municipality, certain institutions and several associations.
