Helmet, sustainable neighbourhood - Schaerbeek

Initiated in 2008-2009, this project took shape around the Place d’Helmet, a place of great social diversity. The philosophy of the project is to reduce the ecological footprint of the neighbourhood and to foster good relations between residents. . Its principal activities are cultivation and maintenance of a shared garden and organisation of collective composting. A trail of greenery linking the Place d’Helmet with the shared garden winds through the neighbourhood, with flowerboxes, climbing plants, colourful pavement, etc.

Two socially-conscious buying groups supporting smallholder agriculture have also been created (provision of organic food baskets) and an affiliated group allows the residents to learn to prepare their own bread. An internet “donnerie” (giveaway site) allows residents to give items they no longer need to their neighbours, and a “servicerie” encourages residents to trade services. In collaboration with the "Friends of the Earth" association, a voluntary simplicity group has been formed. This is a group for discussion, exchange and support, on, among other things, issues of voluntary reduction of consumption.

The project relies on a group of residents, associations (La Gerbe AMOand the Helmet Community Centre) supported by the municipality, and the Schaerbeek Foyer.
