Ka Etterbeek nursery school

This school is located in the gardens of an old château. The sloping hill and the informal entrance under the impressive roof of greenery formed by the trees create a setting worth preserving.

FSC wood and linoleum are among the materials used. The extremely low energy needs (13 kWh/m2.yr) are due to the compactness, the location of the building, the very high level of insulation, the airtightness, the heat wheel and the modest interior and exterior heat loads.
Rainwater recovery, digging of two 15 m3 wells and permeable surfacing are part of the project. In addition to a 448 m2 extensive roof, the project makes use of the sizable number of leafy trees, which serve as a natural sunscreen.
The glazed south and west façades are screened by roof overhangs and opaque portions to guarantee the necessary comfort during the summer. In the winter, the foliage disappears completely, and advantage can be taken of the sun.
