Leopold Park

In the heart of the European quarter, Leopold Park is a space for meeting and relaxation in a highly urbanised environment.

The site is a vestige of the former valley of the Maelbeek. It was listed in 1976. In 2002 and 2003, Leopold Park underwent large-scale renovation: new infrastructures, dredging of the pond, etc. Sizable spaces have been developed around the buildings located in the park to facilitate access. An artificial spring descends the slope of the hill, zigzagging to finish its course in the seal pond, a last vestige of the former zoological garden, just next to the little pond and its small island.

The pond attracts an avifauna typical of bodies of water: mallard ducks, grey herons, moorhens, Egyptian geese, etc. Rose-ringed parakeets can also be observed.

Almost fifty trees appear on the list of remarkable trees in the Brussels-Capital Region. The vegetation in the park has been meticulously inventoried so that sanitary and curative activities as well as the necessary felling of trees can be carried out. The lawns also receive special care, given their intensive use.
