Mellaerts Ponds

Created at the beginning of the 20th century in the wake of Woluwe Park, Mellaerts Ponds Park (from the name of the former owner of the site) is a place for strolling and leisure that has delighted those who like expanses of water for over a century.

Originally formed by the waters of old marshes of the Woluwe, the two ponds are also fed by a number of sources. The larger of the two is devoted in summer to water sports: canoeing and pedal boats. The second is reserved for fishing and strolling.

The banks have been redesigned as gentle slopes, a configuration favourable to plants taking root, offering better resistance to erosion and facilitating access of animals to the body of water. The wet meadows and lawns that surround the ponds develop a special plant biotope very attractive to animal life, and in particular toinsects and butterflies. The Eurasian coot, Egyptian goose, great crested grebe, Canadian goose, Magellan goose, swan and grey heron rub shoulders on these banks.

The differentiated management of the park by Brussels Environment allows natural development of a flora that otherwise would have disappeared.
