The Municipality of Forest has planned construction of a social housing building meeting the current energy challenges, with offices for the CPAS (Public Welfare Centre) on the ground floor, flats on the upper storeys, bicycle parking and reallocation of the community area in the back.
Sustainable development affects several essential aspects: construction of the project (grey energy, water consumption, etc.), its utilisation (energy consumed, etc.) and recovery and/or recycling (lifecycle of the materials). The objective is to reduce heating consumption to 15 kWh/m2.yr (Brussels average: 106).
A ground-coupled heat exchanger, 33 m2 of solar panels, a 25,000 L rainwater cistern, and a 225 m2 extensive green roof have been planned. The back of the parcel, a wooded bank, will be preserved and incorporated through landscaping of the garden. The roof of the community area will be planted so as to blend in with this wooded bed.
