Air

Air quality is a major concern, due to its impacts on health and the environment. It is influenced by a large amount of different pollutants, and is the subject of numerous European standards which must be met.

In Brussels, the quality of the outside air has improved significantly in recent decades and now meets European standards in terms of emissions and concentrations for the majority of pollutants. Nevertheless, efforts are still required to consolidate and/or ensure compliance with European standards pertaining to concentrations of fine particles (PM10) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2).

There are variable sources of pollution (transport, heating in buildings, etc.), and particularly in Brussels they are often influenced by inflows from external sources (pollution imported from neighbouring regions).
